PageTurners: Children's Books Guaranteed to Make Everyone Smile
Children’s books have moved from being about bunnies and flowers (though I dig those) to tackling hard-hitting topics such as race, gentrification and gender. Giving children the opportunity to learn and make their own decisions about those hard-hitting topics through books and reading is powerful...especially during Black History Month.

SWAG HER: TRUE BLACK GIRL MAGIC: NEW AUTHOR BRINGS DIVERSITY TO TAROT
December 06, 2022
True Black Girl Magic!
While many may shy away from tarot and divination, I embrace the subject. So I was extremely excited to learn of and later review the Black Tarot deck by new author and activist Nyasha Williams. The beautiful deck is illustrated with black and brown shades of people with the accompanying An Ancestral Awakening Guidebook and a guided journal for Black Tarot, Ancestral Illumination.
If you are familiar with tarot, you may know that most of the cards usually display people of European descent. So this diverse deck and its companions are much-needed tools.
Nyasha Williams grew up living intermittently between the United States and South Africa. Her efforts as a creator, author, and activist are to combat the systems of White supremacy, colonization, and the patriarchy, working towards decolonizing, liberating, and indigenizing minds, organizations, and our world. She lives in Colorado with her husband. Learn more about her below.
BLACK TALK on KGNU
December 08, 2022
December’s Black Talk features author, creative, activist, Nyasha Williams. She is the author of the newly published and available Black Tarot: An Ancestral Awakening Deck and Guidebook. Join us as we learn about her upbringing in South Africa and Louisville, Colorado.
Nyasha was one of six Black children in her family being raised by white parents. In her mid-20s, she began to embrace her Blackness, Black woman-ness, and deep exploration of her ancestral roots.
All of the pieces and parts that have influenced Nyasha are infused into the tarot deck she has created. We learn about her ancestral awakening and learn about her past, current, and future artistic efforts. Consider the following as a quote that embodies Nyasha’s perspective on life: The true meaning of life is planting trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit — Nelson Henderson.
YOUR OWN MAGIC
December 12, 2022
I believe part of unleashing your most powerful magic includes understanding the roots of where and whom you came from. Nyasha Williams is an author, activist, tarot deck creator, and creator of many more lanes - her new deck - BLACK TAROT: An Ancestral Awakening Deck and Guidebook - came out last week and is a stunning reclamation of Black spirituality and ancestral connection. Features exclusively Black representations of classic Tarot figures and iconography illustrated by Kimishka Naidoo. In this episode, we talk about why she felt connected with magic since she was young, helping kids tap into theirs - especially through cooking, communing with ancestors, divination tools, the Black Tarot, her process of creation, being a creator of many lanes, walking through your passions fully, and unlearning/decolonizing ourselves from white supremacy + the patriarchy. One of my most valuable and powerful episodes to date. Enjoy Nyasha's magic!
