Story Overview
What's the Commotion in the Ocean? is a rhyming children's book reflecting on the current happenings in the ocean and what we can do to help. Being a humanitarian is at the core of my being, and I am to live by the quote, "The true meaning of life is planting trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit." I wrote this book to address our impact as humans on the ocean and inspire change.
A mermaid tells the story, and she is Black. It is inspired by my love of mermaids and fantasy lore. I have always wanted to be a mermaid, but it is hard to have or live out those dreams if you rarely see illustrations, images, or media that reflect this. The ability to see yourself in a book is a beautiful experience, one that I want for all children. It is currently a privilege, one readily available to some, but not all.

@writingtochangethenarrative reached out and asked me if I would be willing to review her book and I felt an instant connection to the cover and the passion of this teacher/poet/environmentalist/adventurer. #sofyaglushko ‘s illustrations alongside #nyashawilliams rhyming and poetry story is a compelling call to action and education.
I am often hesitant to say yes on reviewing self published books as I have more books than I have time to read and reviewed almost 2000 books in 2019 but every once in awhile there is a book like this one that is clearly covering a topic and diversity that deserves more attention. I hope you will contact the author and add this book to your library.

The author has done a great job when writing this book. It's great to see the representation, especially a woman of color speaking about the environment and how we affect it. The illustrations in this book are phenomenal. I also enjoy the rhyming in this book, it helps keep the children attention.

We are so glad to know that this beautiful book exists! Now, more than ever, we need accessible and representative books for children that advocate for the protection of our earth and oceans. Ms. Williams’ story is fun and engaging, while also providing excellent information. The story uses kid-friendly, rhyming language and encourages kids to take specific steps towards being part of the solution. The pictures are gorgeous, full of all kinds of sea dwellers in vibrant colors. We highly recommend this book for families who want to learn more about pollution and how to help clean up our oceans! We steward a Little Free Library and are excited to make this book available to others.
